Nudist Audio Nudistort — look at screen 1

Nudistort 1.2.5 runs as VST3, AU and AAX on any Mac DAW from macOS 10.13 upward, Intel or Apple Silicon.

Drive — the amount of dirt you push into the signal. Crank it for rough edges, keep it low for subtle grit.

Tone — shapes the harshness after the distortion stage. Darker for muffled noise, brighter for cutting, splattery textures.

Mix — blends the transformed sound with the dry input. Useful for layering aggressive character underneath a clean part.

Nudistort is built for noisy textures and expressive harsh sounds, not polite saturation. It changes the audio character radically, which makes it a good fit for industrial, drone or experimental work where you want the plugin to leave a mark.

Not an amp or a pedal

Most distortion plugins on Mac fall into one of two camps: modelled amp sims or soft-clip saturators. Nudistort sits outside both. It doesn't try to sound like a tube or a pedal. Its algorithm works differently — it rebuilds the harmonic content from scratch rather than pushing existing frequencies into breakup.

Compared to Audio Damage FuzzPlus 3, Nudistort is more aggressive. FuzzPlus gives you that transistor-radio fuzz with a familiar tone stack. Nudistort goes further, into territory where the original instrument becomes almost unrecognisable. Where FuzzPlus sounds like a broken amp, Nudistort sounds like the amp is being fed through a metal grinder.

iZotope Trash 2 (if you still run it) offers convolution-based distortion with impulse responses of real-world objects. It's surgical and flexible. Nudistort is the opposite — one algorithm, three controls, no presets for "broken speaker" or "telephone line". You get one thing: brutal harmonic transformation. If Trash 2 is a Swiss Army knife, Nudistort is a single blade that doesn't fold.

D16 Group Devastor 2 gives you multiband distortion with a compressor and filter section. It's precise. Nudistort gives you none of that precision — and that's the point. You reach for Nudistort when you want to destroy, not sculpt.

Cello turned into a factory

I had a drone piece running in Logic — a sustained cello note, held for four bars, looping. It sounded beautiful. Too beautiful. I wanted it to sound like a factory.

I loaded Nudistort on the track. The cello turned into a swarm — dense, metallic, with upper harmonics I didn't know existed in the recording. Now it sounded like the cello was being played inside a machine room.

Next I automated Drive. The sound went from a slight buzz to full-on noise. Then I automated Tone from dark to bright and back, creating a filter sweep effect without using an actual filter.

I exported the part and layered it under a clean piano line. The contrast worked — the noisy cello drone gave the arrangement weight without overwhelming it.

The kick turned into a crackling blast, the snare into white noise bursts. I gated the output with a noise gate afterwards to tighten it. The result was a rhythmic texture that sounded nothing like the original drums, but kept the timing and attack shape.

Cranking everything to maximum

Cranking everything to maximum immediately. Yes, Nudistort is built for extreme sound design. Start lower. Let the dry signal breathe. You can always push harder.

Parallel distortion — blending the clean and processed signals — often sounds fuller than full wet.

Using it on every track in a mix. Nudistort is characterful. One or two tracks processed with it stand out. Six tracks processed with it turn into a muddy, harsh mess. Use it like a spice, not a base ingredient.

Ignoring the Tone control. Beginners tend to set Tone at noon and forget it. But Tone shapes the character drastically. Dark settings produce rumbling, muffled noise — good for bass or pads. Bright settings give you splattery, tearing textures — good for percussion or vocal chops. Sweeping Tone during a track can act as a makeshift filter effect.

Not trying it on quiet signals. Nudistort responds to input level. A quiet, gentle vocal phrase pushed through high Drive and low Mix can sound eerie and broken without being loud. Experiment with input gain staging before the plugin.

Assuming it replaces other distortion plugins. Nudistort does one thing: radical harmonic transformation. It won't do subtle tape saturation, amp modelling or overdrive. Keep your other distortion plugins around. Nudistort is a specialist tool for when you want the sound to fall apart.
