Mac says the DJ app is damaged? Here is the fix
macOS shows this the first time I open a DJ app or a converter that did not come from a shop. Most of the time the file is fine and the quarantine flag is the whole story.
Why the warning shows up
Anything downloaded in a browser gets a quarantine flag. Gatekeeper reads that flag and, if the developer is not one it already trusts, it may say the app is damaged and should be moved to the Trash. Damaged, in that sentence, often means "I have not seen this signature", not "the zip was cut off at the last megabyte". I still check the second case. I just do not start there.
The clicks
- Quit the warning. Do not click Move to Trash yet.
- In Finder, open Applications and find the app.
- Right-click the icon, or control-click, and choose Open.
- Confirm Open in the next dialog. That is the step that clears the flag for this copy.
- If the app then asks for a folder, give it the music folder, not the whole disk.
The second launch should be an ordinary double-click. If it is not, I look at whether I am launching the copy on the disk image instead of the copy I dragged into Applications. Eject the image and try again.
If the only button is Move to Trash
That dialog is the dramatic one. I still do not delete the app as a first move. The right-click Open path above is the one that has worked for me on rekordbox, on XLD, and on a plugin installer. If the button really will not offer Open, I download the file again from the program page rather than fishing a half-written zip out of the Trash.
When it really is damaged
A file that stops at a random byte is actually damaged. The archive will not open, or it opens and the app is an obvious fragment. Download it again. Check you picked the build that matches the Mac, Apple silicon or Intel, when the program ships them separately. The wrong build can look like a broken app and it is not the quarantine flag at all.
Updating a DJ app after that
I quit the app, I install the new build over the old one or beside it as the developer asks, and I do not re-analyse a crate whose grids I have already fixed. Then I export one short playlist to a spare stick. If that stick mounts, the update is done. The rekordbox page has the longer version of that habit.
