Alcove 1.7.9 needs macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later. It runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs — no architecture split. So if you’re on Ventura or older, it won’t install.
What you get is a small utility that turns the notch into something useful. Instead of just sitting there, the notch area becomes a capsule for media playback controls, notifications, and Live Activities. The stock volume and brightness HUDs get replaced with custom ones that match the Dynamic Island style. It’s a straightforward swap: your Mac’s notch gains interactive behaviour without you having to configure much. The interface is in English, and that’s it — no clutter, no extra panels.
How Alcove compares to other notch tools
There aren’t many Mac apps that try to do what Alcove does, but a few come close. Tickeys gives you on-screen keypress feedback – little pop-ups when you type – but it doesn’t touch the notch at all. It’s purely cosmetic for keyboard users, not system-wide. Mactop adds a menubar widget for CPU, RAM and network stats, but again, it lives in the menubar, not in the notch. Neither replaces the volume HUD or shows media playback in the way Alcove does.
Then there’s Dynamic Island (the original concept from Android phones). That’s a phone feature, not a Mac app. Alcove is the closest thing to bringing that behaviour to macOS, because it actually uses the notch area as an interactive zone. Tickeys and Mactop are useful in their own ways, but they don’t change how the notch behaves. Alcove is the only one that replaces the stock HUD and adds capsule-style notifications.
A real-world scenario: DJ prep on a single monitor
Say you’re a music student who also DJs. You’re in your dorm with a MacBook Air M2, prepping a setlist in Rekordbox. Spotify’s playing a reference track in the background. A notification pops up – a new beatcloud upload from a producer you follow. Normally you’d have to reach for the volume slider or click through to see the alert. With Alcove, the media playback controls sit in the notch capsule. You swipe to skip a track, or tap to pause, without leaving Rekordbox. The volume HUD is replaced with the custom one, so you can see where your levels are at a glance. The Live Activities capsule shows the notification text without interrupting your workflow. It’s a small shift, but when you’re bouncing between apps, it saves you a few clicks every time.
Will it slow down my Mac
Will it slow down my Mac?
Alcove is a lightweight app that runs in the background. It doesn’t index files or run continuous scans. On both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, it uses minimal resources. You won’t notice it in day-to-day use.
Does it work with multiple displays?
The notch area is tied to the built-in display on machines that have a notch – the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with a notch. On external monitors, there’s no notch to use. Alcove focuses on the primary display.
Can I turn it off easily?
Yes. You can quit the app from the menubar or from the system tray. It doesn’t install a daemon or a startup service that runs invisibly.
Will it interfere with other menubar apps?
Alcove doesn’t modify the menubar itself. It works in the notch area, which is separate. Most menubar apps should run alongside it without conflict.
What if I don’t like the custom HUD?
You can quit the app and the stock volume and brightness HUDs return. There’s no permanent change to the system.
Is it hard to set up?
No. You open the disk image, drag the app to Applications, and launch it. That’s it. Turning off automatic updates is the one extra step, and it takes about five seconds.
