Astro Gold — look at screen 1

Astro Gold is astrology software for macOS that lets you build and interpret natal charts quickly.

Create a natal chart and check transits

  1. Open Astro Gold and click New Chart.
  2. Enter the birth date, time, and place. The software calculates the planetary positions automatically.
  3. Choose a chart style: round or square. Switch between them to see which layout you prefer.
  4. Add asteroids like Chiron or Proserpina if you work with them. They appear alongside the planets.
  5. Enable transits to compare current sky positions against the natal chart. This shows how today’s movements affect the birth chart.
  6. Check progressions — solar, lunar, or secondary — to see how the chart develops over time. Solar arc and symbolic directions are also available.
  7. For someone moving to a new city, create a relocation chart from the same natal data. The software recalculates the chart for the new location.

That covers one straightforward session: a natal chart, transits, and progressions. Medieval and modern techniques are both included, so you can work with whichever tradition fits your approach.

Version 6.0 brought a significant overhaul to how Astro Gold handles chart calculations and display. The main change you notice day-to-day is the redesigned chart wheel — it’s clearer when you have many aspects active, and the aspect lines don’t overlap as much. The ephemeris data was also updated, which means positions for outer planets and fixed stars stay accurate for current and near-future dates. For regular transit checks, that update alone makes a difference.

Opening an older chart file

People often hit a wall when they try to open a saved chart from an older version. If the chart file doesn’t load, check the file format — Astro Gold 6.2.1 uses a slightly different internal structure. Best fix: recreate the chart from the original birth data and save it again. Another frequent issue: the relocation chart shows the wrong house system. This happens when you forget to set the house system before entering the new location. Set it first under the chart preferences, then enter the place.

Some users find that asteroids don’t appear even after selecting them. The cause is usually the orb setting — asteroids need a wider orb than planets to show aspects. Go into the filter settings and increase the asteroid orb by a degree or two. If astrocartography lines look sparse, the map resolution might be set low. Switch to a higher zoom level and the planetary lines fill in.

Checking the zodiac system first

The biggest one: ignoring the zodiac system setting. Astro Gold defaults to tropical, but if you’re used to sidereal or need it for a specific chart, the whole reading will be off. Always check which zodiac is active before you start. Beginners also tend to pile on every available object — all asteroids, all fixed stars, every aspect — and the chart becomes unreadable. Start with planets, major aspects, and maybe Chiron. Add the rest once you’re comfortable reading the core.

Another slip: mixing up progressions and transits. Transits are the current sky positions; progressions show how the chart itself evolves. Beginners sometimes apply transit interpretations to progression charts and get confused. Label your charts clearly in the file name so you know which is which. Finally, people forget that Astro Gold stores chart data locally. If you switch Macs, you need to copy the chart files or recreate them. Keep a text file of birth data alongside your saved charts.
