You land in New York City with a few dollars in your pocket and a small loan from an uncle. Your first move is renting a cheap apartment, grabbing a part-time job, and saving up until you can open something of your own — maybe a sandwich shop or a small retail store. From there, you hire staff, manage inventory, and reinvest every profit until your business grows into a corporation that rivals the biggest names in the city.

Big Ambitions is a simulation game with a clear focus on the business side of life. You'll spend more time on spreadsheets and supply chains than on socialising. The genre is Indie and Simulation, and the developer, Hovgaard Games, announced the full release on 2026-08-28 with the promise of building an empire and overtaking rivals while growing from rags to riches.

If you enjoy games like Work Simulator or the business segments of GTA Online, this will feel familiar. English voice acting adds a bit of life to the city. But if you'd rather have action or story-driven missions, this isn't that. Patience and planning matter more than reflexes. It's a game for players who like watching numbers climb and systems click into place.

Adjust the camera sensitivity first

Before you jump into the New York streets, open the options menu and adjust a few things. The default camera sensitivity might feel too fast or too slow depending on your trackpad or mouse — dial it down if you find yourself overshooting doorways. Turn on the auto-save interval and set it to every ten minutes. The game saves when you sleep or enter buildings, but an extra safety net saves you from losing progress if you get deep into inventory management and forget to rest.

Switch the interface language to your preference early. The game supports Russian, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Turkish, and French. If you're more comfortable reading menus in your native tongue, set it before you start your first business. Changing it mid-game works, but some tooltips can glitch if you switch while a tutorial is active.

Audio-wise, the English voice acting adds atmosphere, but the background city noise can get repetitive.

Rent the cheapest apartment and walk at first

  • Walk or use the subway until you have at least two stores running a profit.
  • Rent the cheapest apartment. The game tracks your physical and mental health, and a bad mattress lowers your energy recovery. Still, the cheapest place is fine for the first week. Upgrade after your first store turns a consistent profit.
  • Take the uncle's loan early. The interest is low, and you need capital to buy initial inventory. Pay it back as soon as your first business stabilises, but don't rush — a few days of interest won't break you.
  • Check your store's finances daily. The game hides some costs in delivery fees and staff wages. Open the finance tab every morning and look at the net profit column.
  • Save before renovating. Interior renovations cost money and can't be undone. If you spend your last savings on fancy shelves and then realise you can't afford stock, you'll have to reload.

Check your phone and review last night's earnings

You wake up in your rented apartment. The first thing you do is check your phone — the game shows your health bars and a quick summary of last night's earnings.

Your souvenir shop on 42nd Street is open. You walk in, check the shelves, and see that t-shirts are almost sold out while keychains are piling up. You adjust the order quantities for next delivery: more t-shirts, fewer keychains. The delivery truck arrives in two hours, so you have time to visit the bank.

At the bank, you take a small loan to expand into the empty unit next door. You want to open a coffee shop there. The loan officer approves, and you spend the next twenty minutes in renovation mode, placing counters, a coffee machine, and seating. You create a simple logo using the in-game editor — nothing fancy, just a cup with your store name.

Back at the souvenir shop, the delivery has arrived. You help the staff unload and restock. Your mental health is dropping, so you sit on a bench outside for five minutes. The game simulates this as a short recovery period. Then you hire a second employee for the coffee shop, set their schedule, and head home to sleep.

Before bed, you check the corporate rivals tab. You decide to match them for a week and see if your margins hold. Then you save and log off, satisfied that your empire is one day bigger than yesterday.

Set employee work hours in the schedule panel

Staff not showing up. You hire someone, but they never appear. This usually means you forgot to set their work hours in the schedule panel. Open the employee menu, assign shifts, and they'll arrive next in-game day.

Store losing money despite full shelves. Check your rent and staff wages first.

Health bars dropping too fast. You're probably skipping meals and sleep. The game punishes players who grind without breaks. Make a habit of eating at a diner every two in-game days and sleeping a full eight hours.

Can't find a specific business type. The game lists souvenir shops, supermarkets, coffee shops, law firms, clothing stores, wine stores, and flower shops, but some require a minimum cash reserve or a specific license. Check the city hall menu to see what permits you need. If it's greyed out, you haven't met the requirements yet.

Delivery never arrives. You ordered stock, but the truck doesn't come. This happens if your store is closed when the delivery is scheduled. Set your store hours to overlap with the delivery window. You can see delivery times in the supply chain menu.

Game feels slow. Big Ambitions is a marathon, not a sprint. If you're stuck at the sandwich shop stage, focus on saving for a second location. Diversifying income streams is the fastest way to break out of the early grind. Open a different type of business — a coffee shop plus a souvenir store earns more than two identical shops in the same neighbourhood.
