Apple's Open and Save dialogs have not changed much in years. Default Folder 6.3.1 adds a toolbar, a menu bar icon, and per-app default folders so you spend less time navigating.
Can I set different default folders for different applications?
Yes. Default Folder lets you assign a specific default folder per application. When you open or save in that app, it jumps straight to the folder you chose.
Finder windows from the menu bar
It does. You can show Finder windows from the menu bar icon and bring one to the front without switching to the Finder. It also adds a drag target below the menu bar icon when you drag files or folders.
Can I add tags and comments in Save dialogs?
Before you install, a few practical points are worth knowing. Default Folder works with macOS 10.13 or later on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. The languages available are English, German, Danish, French, and Japanese. Installation is straightforward: mount the disk image, drag the app to your Applications folder, and run it. You may need to press Enter in Terminal to bypass Gatekeeper the first time.
Drag target below the menu bar icon
Version 6.3.1 brings a drag target below the menu bar icon. When you drag a file or folder in the Finder over the menu bar, a drop zone appears — releasing it there opens or saves to that location. It saves a couple of steps compared to navigating through dialogs.
Document previews in Open dialogs can show as thumbnails, and you can enlarge them to get a closer look before opening. In Save dialogs, you can rename, duplicate, or delete existing files without switching to the Finder. The same goes for getting info on a file — right there in the dialog.
Keyboard shortcuts are available for frequently used functions, though the exact bindings depend on your setup. If you use the same folders often, the favorites list saves time: add folders you access regularly, and they appear in the menu bar menu and the dialog toolbar.
For users who organise files by project, the per-app default folder feature is worth setting up once. Assign a folder to your audio editor, another to your image editor, and each app opens its own space. The recent folders list also works across applications, so you can jump back to somewhere you used five minutes ago in a different program.
If you sync between Macs, the iCloud fix in 6.3.1 means pinned-folder changes update immediately — no delay when you add a favourite on one machine and expect it on another.
In Save dialogs you can add Spotlight keywords, tags, comments, and labels. No need to open Finder just to tag a file.
