Euro Truck Simulator 2 runs on 64-bit Intel Macs. That covers most Macs from the last decade, so if your machine is relatively recent, you're likely good to go. The game itself is a truck driving sim from SCS Software, the studio behind American Truck Simulator.
Slow, methodical driving across Europe
If you like slow, methodical driving games, this is for you. You haul cargo across more than 60 European cities, from Berlin to Paris, passing hundreds of famous landmarks. There's no racing — just you, the road, and the satisfaction of a clean delivery. You can also customise your truck, swapping headlights, exhaust systems, and other parts, and manage a growing business on the side. It's a great way to unwind after a busy day.
Not for action seekers
If you crave action, this isn't it. Euro Truck Simulator 2 is deliberately paced, and the excitement comes from planning routes and handling long hauls, not from high-speed chases. If that sounds dull, you'll likely lose interest quickly. But if you enjoy a laid-back, almost meditative experience, you'll find hours of calm driving here.
Proximity Exploration auto-reveals map areas
A few features in version 1.61.1.1s don't shout for attention but make a real difference once you know about them. The Proximity Exploration update is a good example — it automatically reveals a small area around your truck while you drive. That means you don't have to stop and zoom into the map to uncover every side road near a city. Just drive past and the map fills in.
The improved material system for selected trucks is another quiet change. It affects how paint, chrome and glass catch the light. You notice it most at dawn or dusk when the sun is low — the reflections feel more natural. It's not a headline feature, but it makes the game look that bit better on an Intel Mac.
The Livestock Trailer rework is worth checking out too. If you take livestock jobs, the trailer now has more detail inside. You can see the animals through the vents. It's a small touch, but it adds to the immersion on longer trips.
Installation snag: missing from Launchpad
Some players hit a wall when they first install. The installer says to mount the disk image and drag the game to Applications. If the game doesn't appear in Launchpad after that, check that you dragged the whole Euro Truck Simulator 2 folder, not just a shortcut. Some users accidentally copy an alias, and then the app doesn't run.
Another snag: the game won't launch because it's Intel-only and your Mac is Apple Silicon. The tested architecture is 64-bit Intel, so if you're on an M1 or M2 machine, you need Rosetta 2 installed. Without it, the app bounces in the Dock and then stops. If that happens, open Terminal and run softwareupdate --install-rosetta. Then try again.
Some players find the controls feel twitchy at first. The default sensitivity for the keyboard steering might be too high. You can adjust that in the settings menu under Controls. Lower the steering sensitivity a few notches and the truck becomes much easier to keep in a straight line on a motorway.
1500 km jobs overwhelm new players
The most common one is taking a job that's too long for your current skill level. New players often pick a 1500 km delivery from Italy to Poland because the pay looks good, then realise they've got two hours of real driving ahead. Start with jobs around 200 to 400 km. You'll learn the roads and the truck behaviour without burning out.
Another mistake is ignoring the damage report after a delivery. If you scrape barriers or hit other vehicles, the damage reduces your pay. Beginners sometimes don't check their truck before accepting the next job, and then wonder why the earnings drop. Look at the damage screen after each trip and take a rest if your truck needs repairs.
People also forget they can hire drivers. They earn money while you're out on your own jobs. It's the fastest way to grow your company, and beginners often leave it too late.
Berlin to Paris in six steps
Here's a start-to-finish way to handle a 600 km job from Berlin to Paris. It's a distance that gives you a good drive without being overwhelming.
- Open the job market in the in-game menu. Filter by distance and pick a cargo that suits your current truck's weight capacity. A 15-ton load is fine for a standard truck.
- Plan your route on the map screen. The game suggests a route, but you can adjust it. For Berlin to Paris, the quickest route goes through Frankfurt and then west via the A4 and A6 motorways. Avoid toll roads if your budget is tight — they add cost without much time saving on this route.
- Once on the road, use the Proximity Exploration feature to your advantage. Keep an eye on the map as you drive near junctions; it reveals hidden petrol stations and rest areas that can be useful for refuelling or sleeping.
- Take a mandatory rest break at a service station near the German-French border. The game enforces driving hours, so plan a stop at about the 300 km mark. Use the time to check your truck's condition and refuel if needed.
- Approach Paris from the north, following the A1 motorway. The city outskirts have tighter junctions and more traffic. Slow down to 50 km/h or so. Use your mirrors — the Livestock Trailer rework means you can see animals in the trailer, but the trailer also handles differently with livestock, so take corners wide.
- Park in the designated delivery bay. Use the in-game camera angles to guide you. The game is forgiving with parking, so take your time.
- Complete the delivery and check the damage report. If you kept it clean, the pay will be good. Then check the job market again — you can take a return load to Berlin or try a new city.
It's a solid introduction to what the game does best: quiet, focused driving through European landscapes, with a bit of business management on the side.
