EndNote 2025.3 runs on any Mac with macOS 10.14 or later, and it works on both Intel and Apple Silicon machines. That's good news if you're still on an older system or if you've just moved to an M-series Mac.

This version is mostly about keeping things stable — the changelog lists bug fixes, nothing flashy. What stays the same is the core job: managing references and building bibliographies without the manual grind.

Tags, colour-coding, and Cite While You Write

  • Organising references with tags and colour-coding.
  • Syncing PDFs, notes and annotations across your devices.
  • Writing in Word or Google Docs with Cite While You Write.
  • Pulling bibliographic data for books, journals and articles.
  • Restoring your library from the cloud when you need it.

English interface and cloud sync limits

  • Only English interface in this build.
  • Cloud sync depends on your EndNote account.
  • No major new features here — it's a polish release.

Simplified Chinese localisation and PDF import fix

This release brings Simplified Chinese localisation, so the interface can now switch to Chinese if your system language is set that way. For English users it makes no visible difference, but it broadens the audience.

The bigger practical fix is a crash in Microsoft Word that happened when Select Matching References appeared. If you've ever had EndNote drop out mid-edit while matching references, that specific crash should be gone now. The rest of the fixes are under-the-hood stuff — nothing that changes how you add citations or format a bibliography day to day.

Native Apple Silicon support and Mojave compatibility

EndNote 2025.3 supports both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs natively. That means no Rosetta translation layer needed on M-series machines. It requires macOS 10.14 or later, which covers Mojave through to the current Sequoia release, so almost any Mac from 2018 onward will run it.

The installer comes as a standard disk image — mount it, run the installer, done. No extra dependencies, no background services to configure. Once installed, it integrates with Word and Google Docs through the Cite While You Write add-in, which the installer sets up automatically.

Cloud sync uses your EndNote account. You can restore a full library from the cloud or roll back individual references to earlier versions. Syncing PDFs, notes and annotations works across devices, but it's not instantaneous — it depends on your internet speed and library size.

Sync account setup and duplicate references

Not setting up a sync account early. If you start building a library locally and only create an EndNote account later, merging the local and cloud libraries can get messy. Best to sign in from day one.

Ignoring duplicate references. When you import from multiple databases, you often get the same paper twice. EndNote has a find duplicates tool — use it early rather than cleaning up 200 duplicates at the end of your project.

Forgetting to back up the library file. The .enl file and its associated .Data folder are two separate things. If you only copy the .enl file to another drive, your PDFs and attachments won't come with it. Always copy the whole folder pair.

Over-relying on automatic formatting. Cite While You Write is handy, but it can misformat a reference if the source data is incomplete. Check your output style settings before submitting a paper. A quick preview saves a lot of manual fixing later.

Researchers managing citations can use EndNote to organize references, and this version includes the endnote torrent. Just make sure you match the build number to your macOS version so the Cite While You Write plugin activates correctly.

Loading it onto the Mac
