Serato Hex FX — look at screen 1

Six effect slots, 200+ presets, and full AAX support make Serato Hex FX a flexible tool for shaping individual tracks or entire buses.

Track insert, bus return, or live performance

Track insert — place it on a single channel to add movement or texture to one element.

Bus or return — run drums, synths, or vocals through it together for cohesive glue or dramatic sweeps.

Live performance — Performance FX like Halftime and Rollout respond well to real-time tweaking.

Studio sessions — chain effects, reorder them, and save your own presets for quick recall.

It works as a native plugin in Serato Studio, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, Maschine, and Pro Tools, with parametric EQ bands for fine control.

Start with a performance FX preset

When you open Serato Hex FX for the first time, the default preset might not show what the plugin can really do. A few quick changes get you to the useful stuff faster.

  • Start with a performance FX preset — presets from Guy Lawrence or DECAP are built for instant impact. Load one, then tweak the mix knob to blend it with your dry signal.
  • Set the EQ bands early — the parametric low-shelf, mid-bell, and high-shelf filters let you carve space before adding effects. Dial in a gentle high-pass on the low shelf to keep mud out of reverb or delay chains.
  • Save your own baseline preset — once you have a chain order and EQ curve you like, save it as a custom preset. That way every new session starts from your setup, not a generic one.
  • Map the macro controls — if your DAW supports MIDI learn, assign the effect mix, dry/wet, and a couple of effect parameters to your controller. It makes live tweaking feel immediate.

Serato Studio and DAW integration

Hex FX sits naturally in a few workflows that go beyond the DAW itself.

Serato Studio users get the tightest integration. The plugin appears in the effect browser like any native tool, and you can chain it with Serato's own effects for layered processing. Loading a preset from Lord Finesse or Amber Navran and adjusting the EQ in Serato Studio's mixer is a fast way to shape a beat.

Logic Pro and Ableton Live handle it as a standard AU or VST. In Logic, you can save Hex FX patches as part of your channel strip settings. In Ableton, group tracks with Hex FX on the group channel and automate the effect parameters for builds and drops.

Pro Tools users benefit from the new AAX Native support in version 1.2.0. The installer includes the AAX option, so you can insert it on audio tracks or aux sends without bridging software.

macOS features — because it runs natively on Apple Silicon and Intel, you don't need Rosetta. The plugin loads as a standard component in Audio Unit or VST hosts. If you use Shortcuts or Automator to batch-process audio files, you can open Hex FX inside a compatible DAW and apply chains to multiple files manually.

Overloading all six FX slots

A few common habits can make Hex FX sound messy or eat up your workflow time.

  • Overloading the chain — six slots are tempting to fill. Stacking reverb, delay, phaser, and distortion on one sound often turns it into noise. Start with two or three effects and add only when the mix needs it.
  • Ignoring the EQ section — the parametric EQ bands are part of the plugin, not an afterthought. Beginners often bypass them and let effects colour the whole frequency range. A quick cut on the low shelf before a reverb keeps the low end tight.
  • Not saving presets — you can reorder effects and save your chain as a custom preset. Many users forget this and rebuild the same chain from scratch every session. Save once, recall anytime.
  • Using it on every track — Hex FX is powerful, but placing it on every channel in a project can clutter the mix. Reserve it for key elements or a single bus where its colour really matters.
  • Forgetting the mix knob — the dry/wet control is your friend. Start at 30–50% and blend to taste.
